Cape Town, South Africa, November 14, 2006.

Nairobi-based ComMattersKenya Limited has announced the birth of a new film festival in Kenya, Lola Kenya Children’s Screen.

With its maiden edition scheduled for August 7-12, 2006, this festival and market whose first name is derived from a Bantu language word meaning ‘to see’, 'watch' or ‘look’, will seek to cultivate sustainable audiences for cinema, inculcate in people the habit of producing high quality films, and market and consume culturally-sensitive audiovisual media productions.

The festival will not only focus on films for children, short films, and African films, but will also hold production workshops annually with the aim of making at least five short films that it will screen and then showcase around the world.

Lola Kenya Children's Screen is aimed at making film production accessible to new, up-and-coming talents, cultivating a sustainable audience for African films, and promoting such films through exhibition and market.

The founder of the initiative, Ogova Ondego, has trained in Germany in management and organisation of film and television festivals and markets; he was the first Kenyan director of the African Cine Week in 2003 and works with and consults for various film festivals in Africa besides sitting on various film juries on art, film, and culture around the world. The festival management, he says, will benefit from an advisory board comprising leading voices on arts and culture in Africa, Europe, Asia and the Americas.

ComMattersKenya is a private company incorporated in Kenya and deals in communications, arts, culture and media-related issues. Its memorandum of association, among other things, empowers it “to carry on in all parts of the world the business of making, producing, exhibiting, distributing, renting, letting on hire and otherwise exploiting cinematography, video and television films and motion pictures.”
